The First Day of Autumn
The first week of August ? Really ?
Is it really Autumn yet ?
So thought the Celts, who marked the season
Just as soon as seeds were set.
But how can we regard it Autumn
When the schools are firmly shut ?
With hottest days perhaps to come,
When the Sun is still a-strut.
Let’s not rush to Autumn,
But embrace the sky-blue time off year !
Why change upon the Lunasa
When Summers is still here ?
The third week of September, though ?
Is that then really Summer still ?
And does the heat of late July belong
Besides the early chill ?
But can we yet regard it Summer
When the leaves are on the turn ?
When the holidays are firmly over,
And the Sun has lost his burn ?
Let’s not cling to Summer
But embrace the golden time of year !
Why wait until the Equinox,
When Autumn is right here ?
